First Electric Christmas Tree Lights

On December 22, 1882, Edward H. Johnson, a close associate of Thomas Edison, displayed the first Christmas tree lit with electric lights in his New York City home. His revolving tree, decorated with hand-wired red, white, and blue bulbs, offered a safer alternative to candle-lit trees and helped inspire a new holiday tradition. Though it took years for electricity to be widely trusted and affordable, electric Christmas lights eventually replaced dangerous candles and became a symbol of warmth and celebration. Like the star that guided the wise men to the Savior, the lights on our trees can remind us to seek and follow the light of Christ during the Christmas season.
