Defender vs. Grenadier, Tea on the Tailgate's origin story & are V8s the future?

In this very special episode, Martin and Steve are in pride of place on the Salmon Sofa on a dauntingly large stage at the inaugural Big Land Rover Fest. The boys talk the best entry point into Land Rovers, why they truly are the most capable off-roaders available, as proven on the Big Land Rover Fest off-road course. The guys are joined by Grenadier owner (don't hold it against him) and off-road driving instructor Gareth Jex, whose Lantra training was instrumental in helping build and fine-tune the off-road course. Gareth also chats about the greenlaning tours that he runs with his company, Surrey 4x4 Tours and Training, and the electric EV Spartan 4x4 is capturing the imagination of show-goers. Next up to the Salmon Sofa is Tim Brown from Dorset Land Rover Club, who is the man behind the recent Tea on the Tailgate revolution. How did it start? Where are things heading? Secrets of the Defender production line plus the Billing Off Road Show is this weekend!

In this week's rather warm episode, Martin and Steve are joined once again by Greg King. The guys have been busy working on Steve's "not brown" Ninety project, and have taken an hour to sit and chat about what's been going on. Ex-JLR employee and engineer Greg King imparts some interesting knowledge on how the classic Defender was put together back in the day, including some methods used during assembly and how you can implement them in your own Defender rebuild. Elsewhere, the guys answer a listener's question on how to purchase a good secondhand Tdi engine for his 110 Tithonus, and debate why Steve has chosen the wrong engine for his project. The Big Land Rover Fest off-road testing, dodgy dealers and a 90 build update

In this week's episode, Martin and Steve are back in the studio after quite some weeks away. There's a big update on Steve's 1985 90 build including body alignment and sourcing genuine parts, and another day in the diary to drive the project even further towards that all-important finishing line. Will the burgundy 90 make it to Fest? Only time will tell... Elsewhere, the boys recap a cracking day at the off-road course for the Big Land Rover Fest, including testing all different shapes and sizes of Land Rover on the course – everything from a £500 Freelander to a £100,000 Range Rover and plenty in between. 50+ years of engine conversions: an hour with Motor & Diesel Engineering

In this week's episode, Land Rover Monthly editor Martin Domoney grabs an hour with Ben Barker at Motor and Diesel Engineering. From the very early days of Perkins diesel converting classic Range Rovers to developing the latest complete drop-in conversion kits for all manner of Land Rover including fitting ULEZ-compliant petrol engines into Defenders. Ben mentions his early Land Rover One Ten County Station Wagon, which may well be giving its 2.25 petrol four-cylinder for rather more modern power, while the mods will remain fully reversible. The 300Tdi gets some serious upgrades at Motor and Diesel, with one of their most popular conversions being a conversion to 2.8 litres – more power and torque especially when combined with one of M&D's variable nozzle turbochargers. Ben is also quick to sing the praises of his Discovery 4 – on 170,000 miles on its original engine and driven hard every day, despite needing yet another park brake module... Nick Dimbleby returns to the Podcast to talk post-Himalayas life with his Freelander, and seeing the vast spread of Land Rover models throughout the LRM Live event. Steve questions Nick about when the legendary 100-inch wheelbase TEW might see the light of day at an LRM event soon. Haddow Hales-Lavercombe also joins us to talk factory-registered Land Rovers and his involvement with the CVC Register. Plus we get a first-hand account of what it's like to drive a 2.25 diesel Series III for hundreds of miles.
