Compassion Fatigue: The empathy tank and the need for refill
Clinicians who face growing emotional exhaustion and decreased empathy while working with high-acuity patients in an integrated behavioral health setting often notice irritability, difficulty staying present during sessions, and a sense of reduced effectiveness, aligning with compassion fatigue. A case example will be discussed in the podcast to demonstrate how compassion fatigue emerges in the work we do a behavioral health clinician. This podcast explores the concept of compassion fatigue, differentiates it from burnout and acute stress responses, and discusses strategies for recovery, including strengthening boundaries, seeking peer consultation, incorporating micro-breaks during the workday, reconnecting with professional purpose, and engaging in restorative self-care.
