Is it possible to do the right thing for all the wrong reasons? Today in 1 Samuel, King Saul's leadership grows increasingly erratic. He binds his army with a foolish oath that almost costs his son Jonathan his life, and then completely fails a direct test of obedience regarding the Amalekites. When Saul tries to substitute religious rituals for actual compliance, Samuel delivers a searing truth: "To obey is better than sacrifice." In beautiful contrast, John 14 takes us back into the Upper Room. Facing the ultimate storm of the crucifixion, Jesus comforts His troubled disciples not with rules, but with His presence, declaring Himself the path to the Father and promising a Helper who will never leave them.
