What does a true leader look like? Today in 1 Samuel, Saul is publicly chosen by lot as king, wins his first major military victory against the Ammonites, and has his kingship confirmed at Gilgal. Yet, as Samuel delivers his farewell address, he warns the nation that having a human king will not save them if they rebel against God. In the Gospel of John, we see a completely different picture of power. On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus stands up from the dinner table, wraps a towel around His waist, and drops to His knees to wash the dirt from His disciples' feet—showing that in His Kingdom, the greatest of all must become the servant of all.
