Bernice is having a truly rotten time at her friend's birthday party. First, everyone else gets a piece of cake with a frosting rose. But not Bernice. Then, everyone else gets strawberry-melon soda. Bernice gets the prune-grapefruit juice. And it's warm. The last straw is the one lousy (squished) candy she gets from the piñata. So when the balloons arrive, Bernice knows just what she has to do: grab them all. And then, poor cross Bernice gets carried up, up, and away. Luckily, she figures out just how to make her way back down to the party...and she brightens lots of other animals' days on her way.
Stick Man, written by former Children's Laureate Julia Donaldsonand illustrated by Axel Scheffler, is a children's story about an anthropomorphic wooden stick who becomes separated from his family home and his Odyssey-like adventure to return there. He is eventually reunited with his family in the "family tree" as a result of his interaction with Father Christmas. It takes place in England.

Miss Hawthorn's room is neat and tidy, not a pencil or paintbrush is out of place. And that's how she likes it. And she likes trees that are colored green and apples that are painted red. Jasper Rabbit loved carrots, especially the carrots that grew in Crackenhopper Field. They were "fat, crisp and free for the taking". Jasper enjoyed these carrots "on the way to school, on his way to Little Leaguepractice and on his way home at night", until he started to imagine that they were following him. He first noticed something strange after his Little League game when he stopped at Crackenhopper Field. He thought he saw three jack-o-lantern-jawed carrots behind him in the bathroom mirror. When he turned around, it was just a washcloth, shampoo bottle, and a rubber duck. Then while he was brushing his teeth, he saw the creepy carrots. Jasper yelled for his parents when a carrot shadow lurked up on his bathroom walls. "By the end of the week Jasper was seeing creepy carrots creeping EVERYWHERE."
In the town of Chewandswallow, food falls from the sky three times a day. When the weather turns bad, citizens face a difficult decision: Should they stay in their town, where it is unsafe to step outside, or abandon their homeland and set off for another town?
Bear is afraid of his reflection, water, the dark, heights, and more, and on their adventure Rabbit jumps across a river, goes through the woods, climbs a mountain, and patiently waits for Bear at every step of their trek. But when Rabbit needs help, it's Bear who needs to come to the rescue.
