Season 1
Feeling Gobbly
Explicit
After a long break due to busy spring schedules, Ryan and Reuben return to talk turkey with Matt Hogan. A lot of birds have gone down between the three of them in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Montana. Tune in to hear the story of Ryan’s solo hunt success in Minnesota along with the story of a long weekend hunt in Montana with Matt and Reuben. And as always, be ready to hear what the guys have been up to in the kitchen with their wild game.
Stop the Trophy Runners!
Ryan and Reuben dive into the term "trophy hunting" and relate animal "trophies" to a medal won in a foot race. Although running and hunting are different, the discussion delves into parallels between the two (Ryan and Reuben both competed in NCAA level competitive running) and how the term "trophy hunting" is often misleading to people who don't know the full story behind someone's taxidermy. Meals: Elk neck roast seasoned with smoked salt and crushed juniper, braised in turkey broth, mushrooms, shallot, and sage. Seasoned elk gyros (meatloaf variety) with Tzatziki sauce.
The Runner’s Edge
This week, Ryan and Reuben are joined by Trevor Anderson to talk about a different angle of their hunting experiences as it pertains to competitive running. Ryan and Reuben both raced in the NCAA, while Trevor just started his running journey last year which already includes a successful marathon. With decades of hunting and running experience at the table, this episode focuses on stories that highlight parallels between the two endeavors.
Failures in the Field
On this episode, Reuben and Ryan go over some stories that end in failure; clean misses, bad hits, and how to move forward. Mistakes in the field happen, but it’s all about what you learn from them to become a better outdoorsman both in skill and mental capability.
Montana Rifle Mule Deer
This week we jump in to part 2 of our mule deer stories. Unlike Ryan’s early season Utah hunt on last episode, this story takes place in the steep and deep backcountry of western Montana where Reuben hunts for a timber buck on a familiar mountain. Tune in for a story about stealth, persistence, and a rodeo of an ending. Recipes: Venison pastrami Pan fried pheasant
Utah Archery Mule Deer
This week we dive into the first of two mule deer hunting stories that are so different, the only commonality might be the species. In this part 1 of 2, we hear the story of Ryan’s velvet archery hunt in southern Utah. Tune in to hear the tale of hurricanes, fog, and a big buck. Recipes: Cream of mushroom deer heart Griller green-winged teal
Hunter interactions- the good, the bad, and the ugly
Explicit
This week we discuss interactions we've had with other hunters in the field. Whether you knowingly jump-shoot ducks beneath a deer hunter in a tree stand or, in contrast, help a total stranger pack out a mountain mule deer, this episode goes over what we've learned about interacting with fellow hunters.
Fall Success (Public Land Elk)
This week we pick up where we left off on part 2 of our fall successes episodes. Reuben tells the story of his solo backcountry elk hunt in western Montana riddled with miles of hiking, multiple bugling bulls, and one that didn’t quite get away. A main take away from this story is attention to details and after-shot discipline to seal the deal.
Fall Success (Public Land Whitetail)
This week we return from a six-week absence to record a 2-part episode about the reasons we’ve been away; hunting and success. In this first episode, we delve into Ryan’s deer season and the story of his most dialed public land hunt which ends in the taking of a stud buck in the most intense October whitetail situation you can think of.
Bull in the Bowl
In this week's episode Ryan and Reuben share their first successful archery elk stories. Both stories have similar endings, but the strategies to get there differ. In the end it is evident that there isn’t just one way to kill an elk, and the people you share it with make the memories.
