New York, 1933. Ben Reilly takes on Cat Hardy's case to find the missing Flint Marko, and the search turns up a wartime platoon photograph linking Marko to the late Jimmy Addison and an unidentified giant of a man. As Ben and his secretary Janet dig in, Robbie runs his own line of investigation into the slums, finding scorched handprints and a lead on Addison's widow. Silvermane's men close in, dragging Ben toward a face-to-face with the crime boss before he escapes with a barrel roll and a bridge-hang, and the pressure eventually pushes Janet to quit. Alone, haunted by the memory of Ruby, Ben decides to reclaim the spider suit he buried in the wall of his old apartment, posing as a maintenance man to retrieve it.
