Energy Storage and Battery Innovation The battery sector is pivoting from standard lithium-ion (LIB) technologies toward solid-state batteries (SSBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) to address safety, energy density, and resource scarcity. SSBs utilize solid electrolytes (e.g., sulfides, oxides, polymers) to enable lithium-metal anodes, offering higher energy density and safety, though scaling manufacturing and ensuring interface stability remain significant hurdles. Concurrently, sodium-ion batteries are emerging as a cost-effective, abundant alternative for stationary storage, bypassing lithium supply chain risks.
