The Comprehensive Obligation of Love, Wednesday September 30th, 2026

The Comprehensive Obligation of Love Romans 13:8-14 John 13:34-35 “We don’t take the gifts and spend them on feasts, drinking-bouts, or fancy restaurants. Instead, we use them to support and bury poor people, to supply the needs of boys and girls who have no means and no parents. We support the elderly now confined to their homes. We also help those who have suffered shipwreck. And if there happen to be any in the mines, or banished to the islands, or shut up in the prisons—for nothing but their fidelity to the cause of God’s Church—they then become the nurslings of the confession they hold [as we take them in to help them]. Primarily it is the acts of love that are so noble that lead many to put a brand on us. ‘See,’ they say, ‘how they love one another…’” (Tertullian, Apology, chapter 39). Romans 13:8-10 I. The Call to Ongoing Horizontal Love Matthew 22:37-40 Romans 13:11-12a II. The Urgent Call to Ongoing Horizontal Love · Maintain a balanced view of ourselves (12:3) · Utilize our gifts for the good of the body (12:4-8) · Outdo other Christians in showing honor to one another (12:9-16) · Return good for evil and leave room for God to convict and redeem others (12:17-21) · Meet all our obligations to government officials and give them the respect they are due (13:1-7) Romans 13:12-14 III. The Specifics of the Call to Ongoing Horizontal Love 1. Children of light should not be characterized by revelry and drunkenness emphasizing self-indulgence. 2. Children of light should not be characterized by lewdness and lust emphasizing sexual misconduct. 3. Children of light should not be characterized by strife and envy emphasizing contention and quarreling. Romans 13:14 Galatians 3:27 1 John 4:19 “Assuredly this confederacy should be rooted out and execrated for they know one another by secret marks and signs and they love one another almost before they know one another. Promiscuously they call one another brother and sister.” 1. Let us cultivate a sense of debt. 2. Let us enlarge our definition of neighbor. 3. Let us cultivate a sense of the time. 4. Let us consciously put off the works of darkness and put on the Lord Jesus Christ every day.
