Club Penguin began as a father's answer to the unmoderated, ad-saturated internet of the early 2000s. Sparked by a Far Side penguin cartoon and prototypes like Experimental Penguins and Penguin Chat, Lance Priebe, Lane Merrifield and Dave Krysko financed the game on personal credit cards, refused advertising, and launched in October 2005 with a strict freemium model where 10 percent of paying subscribers covered the other 90 percent. Word of mouth alone took it from 15,000 users to 1.4 million within months, and Disney bought it in 2007 for 350 million dollars upfront.
