In the mid-1950s a rising singer appeared in the Hollywood musical The Girl Can't Help It wearing the same orange dress Marilyn Monroe wore in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, then took a match to it. That singer was Anna Marie Wooldridge, better known as Abbey Lincoln. This episode traces her journey from rural Calvin Center, Michigan, the tenth of twelve children, through stage names like Gabby Lee and a glamorous 1956 debut album, to the moment studying Billie Holiday convinced her the studio-built image was a cage worth burning.
From there the story follows her partnership with drummer Max Roach and the 1960 record We Insist! Freedom Now Suite, her role in disrupting a United Nations Security Council meeting after the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, the Naturally '62 fashion show with the Grandassa models, film roles in Nothing But a Man and ...Â
