This episode explores the life of Mathis James Reed, born in 1925 in Dunleith, Mississippi, who moved to Chicago in 1943, served in the Navy until 1945, married Mary, the woman the world would know as Mama Reed, and settled in Gary, Indiana to work at the Armour meatpacking plant by day while busking with the Gary Kings by night.
