Born around 1822 near present-day North Platte, Nebraska, Red Cloud was orphaned as a young child but brought into the center of Oglala political life through his maternal uncle, Old Chief Smoke. Raised within a matrilineal Lakota world, he learned early how to navigate factional politics, intertribal rivalries, and warfare against neighboring Pawnee and Crow bands. Those skills later became essential as he built the alliances needed to resist U.S. expansion into Lakota territory.
