In this episode of pplpod, we explore the life of Red Cloud, or Maȟpíya Lúta, the Oglala Lakota leader who achieved one of the rarest victories in American history: forcing the United States military to abandon its forts and agree to Native terms. Born around 1822 near present-day North Platte, Nebraska, Red Cloud was orphaned as a young child but brought into the center of Oglala political life through his maternal uncle, Old Chief Smoke. Raised within a matrilineal Lakota world, he learned early how to navigate factional politics, intertribal rivalries, and warfare against neighboring Pawnee and Crow bands. Those skills later became essential as he built the alliances needed to resist U.S. expansion into Lakota territory.
