Season 1
Bombed Again ("Pearl Harbor" with Justin from "Unvarnished")
Explicit
PEARL HARBOR is what happens if Michael Bay wants to make TITANIC and everybody around him says, ‘OK, you should definitely go for it bro!’” We kick off the back half of our year-long trek through 2001's cinema monuments with one of the most dreadful blockbusters of the 21st century. And we welcome back a special guest, Justin of “Unvarnished,” to help us parse through the history. If PEARL HARBOR’s greatest offenses were its historical inaccuracies, that’d be one thing. But the best performance in this movie comes from a character that could have easily been written out of the movie. It’s a Michael Bay masterclass, is what I’m trying to say. (This shit was nominated for FOUR Oscars and actually won one!!!) We dive into some actual history about the events of Pearl Harbor and World War II before a rather complicated discussion as we try to answer “Does this movie matter?” SHOW NOTES: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QWMVsl0fYLo2ojmRp8IjDQ-jpO1eHUoYiHeA91SFM0c/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.e32fsjx5hwrr Subscribe to Unvarnished: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/unvarnished/id1871869874 NOT ANOTHER 2001 MOVIE PODCAST is a limited series exploring movies released in the first year of a chaotic century. My World's On Fire, How 'Bout Yours? ("Shrek")
Explicit
Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me. And they were correct. Honestly a great call. We’re battered but not broken after 25(!!!!!) mainline episodes of this “limited series” and have finally arrived at the halfway mark, and it’s a big boy — SHREK is on deck!!!!!! Does this swampy romp even need an introduction? SHREK won the first EVER Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film and spawned a full-fledged franchise with spin-offs and everything. It’s a middle finger to Disney that somehow has as much heart as anything produced by the Mouse House (if not more). It’s probably singlehandedly responsible for keeping Smashmouth relevant forever. Does SHREK matter? Do donkeys talk? It's a Grouper! (".Com for Murder" with Tojo Yamamoto's Larry Joe Treadway)
Explicit
Is .COM FOR MURDER a tech-thriller? An unintentional comedy? A prophetic look at the future? Even a 2001 movie? We try to answer some of those questions this week with our special guest Larry Treadway, lead singer of Tojo Yamamoto and a renowned aficionado in cinema that’s … less loved than most. Directed by longtime D-lister Nico Mastorakis and staring Nastassja Kinski, Nicollette Sheridan, Roger Daltrey and Huey Lewis, the film follows a paralyzed woman who stumbles upon a live-stream killer on the early internet. We dive into the film’s peak-Y2K aesthetic, the hilarious logistics of its technology, and how it captured a unique moment when the World Wide Web really did feel “wide.” In our bonus feature segment, we leverage Mastorakis’s “pedigree” to dig into the history of exploitation cinema. From the grindhouse theaters of the 1970s and the direct-to-video boom of the '80s and '90s to how the genre's DNA has mutated in our modern media landscape, these movies have shaped our culture far more than they often get credit for. Let us know some of your favorites! Does .COM FOR MURDER matter in 2026? Let’s just say it took us two attempts to record this episode to completion — that’s how much we cared!!! Die Vergangenheit wiederholt sich ("Nowhere in Africa")
Explicit
This week we’re traveling across continents and deep into our feels with NOWHERE IN AFRICA (NIRGENDWO IN AFRIKA) Caroline Link’s sweeping 2001 drama captivated global audiences and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 75th Academy Awards (an important distinction particularly for our show). Based on Stefanie Zweig's autobiographical novel, the film tells the story of a Jewish family fleeing Nazi Germany to start a new life on a remote farm in Kenya. We dive into the film’s exploration of cultural displacement, the nuanced portrayal of familial relationships through the lens of a young girl approaching adolescence and discuss what it “home” really means. We use this week’s bonus feature to highlight other prominent 2001 movies directed by women before a bigger discussion about Hollywood’s general treatment of female directors, especially how things have improved and how it could be better. Finally: does NOWHERE IN AFRICA still matter? Spoiler: it may more than ever. Up Yours ("Evolution" with Malcolm of "Hidden Stats: The Podcast")
Explicit
Check your meteorites at the door, because this week we’re dealing with an outbreak of alien ass! Luckily we’ve got extra help: Malcolm from “Hidden Stats: The Podcast” joins the show. It’s time for EVOLUTION, Ivan Reitman’s 2001 sci-fi comedy that attempted to recapture the lightning-in-a-bottle energy of GHOSTBUSTERS, but with a lot more Head & Shoulders. We dive into the film's bizarrely stacked cast (David Duchovny, Orlando Jones, Seann William Scott, and Julianne Moore), debate the merits of product placement and spend more time talking about GHOSTBUSTERS and stealing cable than we probably should have. Our bonus feature this week centers around a big theme of the cast's careers: the leap from TV to film. How have the lines between television actors and major movie stars changed from 2001 to now? Finally, as always*, we ask: does EVOLUTION matter? This One's for the Losers ("Ghost World")
Explicit
GHOST WORLD, Terry Zwigoff’s 2001 adaptation of the Daniel Clowes comic book with the same name, departs from the source material in some key material ways but is about as faithful, spiritually, as anything you’ll find. The film, like the comic, follows Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) right at the point where they start to navigate that weird post-high school, pre-rest of our life space we all experience. Here, though, a character named Seymour — a super-minor guy in the book who’s fleshed out considerably in the flick, where he’s played by Steve Buscemi — becomes something of an obsession for Enid. In our bonus feature segment, we trace the history of comic-book and, by extension, superhero adaptations over time. We walk through how the industry transitioned from these quirky, counter-culture anomalies into the (withering) juggernaut of today. Does GHOST WORLD still matter in 2026. Well … we completely forgot that segment LOL. It only took 22 episodes! As a mea culpa, Josh has offered himself up as sacrifice — stick around for the end of the episode to hear him singing karaoke with his sister Brittany. Sequel: The Movie ("The Mummy Returns")
Explicit
After the breakout success of 1999’s THE MUMMY, a new take on the classic movie monster, less than two years later Universal decided it was gonna squeeze every last drop out of its revitalized IP. THE MUMMY RETURNS, Stephen Sommers’ action-packed, CGI-heavy follow-up that threw (up) everything at the screen. We discuss the film's frenetic pacing, its massive box-office success, and, of course, the big-ass scorpion in the room. Things stay thrilling in this week’s bonus feature, wherein we talk all things Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson! We chart the trajectory of his career from the wrestling ring to becoming one of Hollywood's most bankable leading man. Does THE MUMMY RETURNS matter in 2026? You gotta listen to find out (LOL). Meddling Kids ("The Others" with Merrilee from "Fear Coded: A Queer Horror Podcast")
Are you ready to hide from the light? This week, we’re closing the curtains and lighting a candle for Alejandro Amenábar’s gothic masterpiece THE OTHERS. We discuss Nicole Kidman’s powerhouse performance as the high-strung Grace Stewart, the film’s masterful cinematography, its "twist" and how it compares to that of a much more famous contemporary, THE SIXTH SENSE. In our bonus feature segment, we dive more into plot twists and their history in cinema, and talk about ones we enjoyed and ones we didn't as much. (It'll surprise you, I'm sure, that this opened the door for more US slander from Slate.) Finally, we answer "does THE OTHERS matter in 2026?" Does this ghost story still have the power to haunt us? Most People Average Over Seven Hours of Screen Time Each Day ("Pulse")
Explicit
CONTENT WARNING: THIS EPISODE INCLUDES DISCUSSION OF DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE Whether you call it PULSE or KAIRO or CIRCUIT, this week’s movie is as unnerving as a dial-up tone. Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, PULSE is a cornerstone of the J-horror boom that trades the jump scares of its contemporaries for a slow-crawling sense of existential dread. The film follows two groups of young people in Tokyo who start engaging with ghostly transmissions appearing on their computer monitors. In our bonus feature segment, we briefly dive into the history of horror cinema in Japan, the J-horror wave of the early 2000s and how American remakes worked and didn’t. Does PULSE matter in 2026? This might be our most divisive discussion yet. SHOW NOTES NOT ANOTHER 2001 MOVIE PODCAST is a limited series exploring movies released in the first year of a chaotic century. The Guy Who Made This Movie is a Monster ("Jeepers Creepers")
CONTENT WARNING: THIS EPISODE INCLUDES DISCUSSION OF SEX CRIMES AND PEDOPHILIA. This week, we’re hitting the road to discuss JEEPERS CREEPERS, the 2001 creature feature that turned a catchy old tune into a nightmare. In our bonus feature segment, we tackle a darker reality: the crimes of the movie’s director, Victor Salva. We discuss the history of his conviction, the controversy surrounding his Hollywood comeback, and the complicated "death of the author" debate when it comes to supporting films made by monsters. Every 23rd spring, for 23 days, it gets to eat. But does JEEPERS CREEPERS matter 25 years later? SHOW NOTES.
