The story of Christmas includes God reaching out to Joseph and Mary through sending an angel. The angel provided enough clarity on what God was up to so that both Joseph and Mary had the opportunity to place their faith in him—in his working out ancient plans, working new things in and through them, operating through the power of his Spirit and sending Christ to save people from their sins.
