The Shimabara Rebellion
The rebellion was a massive uprising of around 37,000 impoverished peasants and rōnin (masterless samurai)—many of whom were devout Roman Catholics—fighting against extreme taxation and religious persecution. The insurgents retreated to the dilapidated Hara Castle, successfully holding off a massive shogunate army.
