Good afternoon. New Mexico. I'm Aaron Jolly. Alright folks, cover your coffee. The wind is absolutely howling across New Mexico today. And it's bringing serious fire danger with it. In the next 24 hours. Step outside right now and those southwest gusts are already whipping dust into the air. This afternoon, sustained winds hit 15 to 20 miles an hour statewide, but the real kickers are those gusts — we're talking 40 to 50 miles an hour in exposed areas. That's strong enough to yank trash cans down the street and make highway driving feel like a wrestling match. Down in Albuquerque, you're climbing to 72 degrees with patchy blowing dust before 5 P.M. Tonight cools to 35 under mostly clear skies. Head south toward Las Cruces and you hit the warm spot — 76 degrees today. Up north around Taos and the mountains, highs only reach the low 60s.
