In January 2011, 27-year-old first-grade teacher Ellen Greenberg was found dead in her Philadelphia apartment during a blizzard. She had 23 stab wounds, including ten to the back of her own neck, 31 bruises in varying stages of healing, and a serrated kitchen knife buried four inches into her chest. The city of Philadelphia ruled it a suicide, and they have spent the last fourteen years defending that conclusion against independent forensic experts, two civil lawsuits, a Pennsylvania Supreme Court petition, and a court-mandated reinvestigation in which five out of seven outside consultants disagreed with them. The original pathologist who changed the ruling to suicide later signed a sworn statement saying it should be classified as something other than suicide.
