Endocrine Disruptors

In this episode, Jenna and Renata discuss Endocrine Disruptors. The endocrine system is made up of hormone-producing glands. Hormones are the chemical messengers of the body. They transport data and instructions from one group of cells to the next. Almost every cell, organ, and function in our body is influenced by the endocrine system. Hormones are chemicals that coordinate different functions in your body by carrying messages through your blood to your organs, skin, muscles and other tissues. These signals tell your body what to do and when to do it. Hormones are essential for life and your health. Hormones affect nearly every process in your body, including metabolism (the way you break down food and get energy from nutrients), growth and development, emotions and mood, fertility and sexual function, sleep, blood pressure, etc. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are natural or human-made chemicals that may mimic, block, or interfere with the body’s hormones, which are part of the endocrine system. These chemicals are associated with a wide array of health issues. Endocrine disruptors are found in many everyday products, including some cosmetics, food and beverage packaging, toys, carpet, and pesticides. Some chemicals that act as flame retardants may also be endocrine disruptors. Contact with these chemicals may occur through air, diet, skin, and water. EDCs cannot be completely avoided or removed; however, you can make informed choices to reduce exposure and risk of any potential health effects. We discuss how to reduce the exposure as well as organic brands that are affiliated with limiting every day human exposure. There are a lot of alternative options available like glass tupperware, stainless steel pans, cleaning products, etc. Below, we share homemade cleaning sprays and the vitamins we recommend for safely detoxifying the body. Guest Episode with Danielle Smith

On this episode, Renata and Jenna discuss mental health within children and how we can destigmatize getting help with Licensed Mental Health Counselor Danielle Smith. With Over 10 years of experience working with children and families providing psychotherapy, group therapy, as well as behavioral interventions. Danielle has provided psychotherapy and behavioral specialist work for children from ages 4 through 21 years old. She’s worked in environments such as schools and community-based services including going into homes of families in the Capital Region. She has also focused on outpatient behavioral health and managed care which is directly related to health insurance. With her background in mental health and education, her passion as always been working with children and their caregivers to identify mental health needs and provide support, advocacy, and education on mental health diagnoses and treatment to reduce stigma related to mental health. Natural Immune System Support

On this episode, Renata and Jenna discuss natural ways you can build a strong immune system. We both value holistic health and feel moms and families will benefit from some alternative medicinal protocols. This elaborates on eliminating unwanted habits (the overindulgence of substances and negative behavior), introduce correct habits (breathing, exercise, positive attitude), and create new principles of living (proper nutrition and natural ways to heal). The immune system normally guards against germs like bacteria and viruses. When it senses these foreign invaders, it sends out an army of fighter cells to attack them. Guest Episode Featuring Brittany SantaBarbara

On this episode, Renata and Jenna have another guest, Brittany Santa Barbara, RN. Brittany started her nursing career in the hospital NICU and worked there for about a year before going to the labor and delivery department in another hospital. She was a labor and delivery nurse for 6 years and then transitioned to the Nurse Educator. Her experience as a labor and delivery nurse has taught her so much. She feels being a part of someone’s birthing experience is so special. Generally, it can be a very happy and positive experience, but really, it’s a very vulnerable experience and both labor and delivery come with challenges that society doesn’t really talk about, such as a significant post-partum hemorrhage, unplanned emergency cesarean birth, hypertension/preeclampsia. In her role now as the nurse educator, she helps with updating hospital policies, so she does a lot of research on current practice in maternal health. She also teaches classes like fetal monitoring. What she likes most about her new position is that she can get creative and come up with new ways to educate as well as figure out what is most needed on the units and in the hospital. This episode tackled a lot of in hospital protocols and what they do in situations of emergencies, as well as implementing new ways to help moms when it comes to comfort in the hospital. Prenatals and Multivitamins - Why they are important & what to look for in a good supplement

In this episode, Jenna and Renata discuss the importance of prenatals and multivitamins, before, during, and after pregnancy. These supplements contain vital nutrients for your baby's healthy growth that you may not get enough of from food. During pregnancy, your required daily intake of certain vitamins and minerals increases. We address when and how long you should be taking a prenatal multi as well the significant vitamins and minerals you should be looking for in your supplement and how you can find those in food. We discuss the differences between folate and folic acid and genetic variants that could cause a disruption in folate absorption. We also touch on the ingredients to avoid, ethical brands that use third party testing, and have certifications proving efficacy. This topic can be overwhelming to tackle, so we have got you covered.

The Shortcomings of Postpartum Maternal Care Pt. 2

In this episode, Jenna and Renata touch on the barriers surrounding breastfeeding, the benefits of skin to skin, lactation nutrition, community support, must reads, doula work, and insurance coverage. We believe breastfeeding is not encouraged enough, whether it be in the hospital or around America. We discuss possibilities that could help reduce the stigma surrounding breastfeeding as well as nutritional components that play a role in milk productions. Doulas are a really great help for prenatal and postpartum care and now insurance companies are creating plans to have clients reimbursed if they use a doula. We feel this is a step in the right direction for moms to be and new moms. Jenna and Renata also mention community support and how it is necessary to be given resources to find where the support exists in surrounding areas. We believe it should be mandatory to provide a resource list so a mom to be and new mom don't have to go searching for it, especially if moms are experiencing PPA and PPD. In this episode, Jenna and Renata discuss the shortcomings of postpartum maternal care.
