Happy New Year Everyone, and welcome back to the Disruptors, a series dedicated to individuals-- well, disrupters really-- that are closing disparities, changing the very fabric of our nation, or just making dreams come true all from ATL. We kicking off 2022 the best way we can, with The Trouble Maker ** “When the entire world is falling apart these are the people that show up.” This statement was said by Center for Civic Innovation Executive Director and Founder Rohit Maholtra. Rohit was speaking about the CCI 2021 fellows, a group of socially conscious entrepreneurs that are set to address inequality in Atlanta under the guidance and support of CCI. This fellowship is just one of the programs ran under CCI, a safe space where civic engagement has been made more accessible due to the hard work of not only Rohit, but his entire team: Home of Good Trouble And he just gets it, like really gets it. In 2020, I received a letter penned in my inbox by Rohit that read: Over the past 100 years of Atlanta's history, Black womxn have been at the center of every social movement for justice and peace. From labor movements to anti-segregation protests, Black womxn, without credit, put their spirits and bodies on the line for progress-- often for someone else's well-being or power. Whether in 1881 or in 1906 or 1960 or 2014 or 2020, Black womxn fought, and continue to fight, for Atlanta to be a better version of itself. There are not enough street signs in Atlanta to rename in honor every womxn of the movement; but the impact of their collective labor and love permeates through any attempts to erase individual names.
