Baron-Cohen et al. (1997) aimed to find out whether the ‘Reading the Mind in the Eyes’ task could successfully detect deficits in theory of mind in individuals with autistic spectrum disorder.

A secondary aim of the experiment was to discover whether any gender differences exist in ‘theory of mind’ abilities in neurotypical people.
