Episode 009 - Jim Michelotti & Alana Wangen: The House We Lived In

In this episode of Lives of the Carroll Saints, host Alana Wangen sits down with Jim Michelotti, a 1966 Carroll College graduate, Butte native, and 2026 Golden Graduate. Jim reflects on his journey from Boys Central High School in Butte to Carroll, where a difficult freshman year and the support of the Carroll community helped shape his life. He shares memories of St. Charles Hall, Carroll’s close knit campus community, and the professors and mentors who encouraged him to pursue new possibilities. Jim also recounts a career that took him from mathematics and teaching into the emerging world of computer science, with stops at Boeing and IBM before a 30 year career at Montana Tech. Along the way, he discovered how an education in mathematics could open unexpected doors and create opportunities to serve his community. The conversation also explores Jim’s lifelong commitment to Butte and his work preserving the city’s history through The Lost Neighborhoods, an effort to use emerging technology to bring lost neighborhoods and the stories of their residents back to life. Through stories of family, friendship, education, and service, Jim reflects on the lasting connections Carroll creates and what it means to carry a Carroll education into a life of meaningful work and community.
