Episode notes

We often think of visible arrogance and imposter syndrome as complete opposites, but classical Islamic psychology suggests they are actually two expressions of the same spiritual challenge. In this episode, we explore how both a loud performative ego and chronic self-doubt stem from a single internal root.

Instead of a confidence deficit, imposter syndrome is diagnosed here as an excess of self-attention. When we constantly obsess over whether we are good enough or how others perceive us, we are holding our own self at the center of our psychological universe rather than focusing on our Creator. True healing does not come from trying to build up our self-esteem through affirmations, which only reinforce this self-centrality, but rather from learning to embrace tawadu, or deep, servant-like humility.
