When filmmaker Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodman) wants to test out some new theatrical gimmicks for his B pictures like Mant! and The Shook Up Shopping Cart, he sets his sights on Key West, Florida - the common folk down there just want to see a good light-hearted action film to distract them from the imminent danger brewing down in the Caribbean between them and Cuba. With the local kids in tow, Woolsey will make sure that the entire town is entertained, whether they really survive or not! Will they see the evening show, or will they only make it to the….Matinee!
