1920–1930: The Roaring Twenties and the Crash
Episode notes
The 1920s opened with a nation tired of war and reform and hungry for normalcy. Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover presided over a decade of booming industry, mass consumer culture, and rapid social change. Prohibition created a nation of lawbreakers and empowered organized crime. Women who had won the vote experimented with new freedoms. Jazz, radio, and the automobile reshaped daily life. The Harlem Renaissance gave powerful voice to Black artists and writers. Yet beneath the surface ran deep tensions — immigration restriction, racial violence, the Scopes Trial, and growing inequality. In October 1929 the stock market collapsed, and the party ended. Jim Rand walks through the decade of exuberance and excess that closed with the first shock of the Great Depression.
