The Freedom Monument in Tahrir Square

The Freedom Monument in Tahrir Square, Baghdad, completed by Iraqi artist Jawad Saleem in 1961, is considered one of the most important artistic landmarks in Iraq. The monument consists of 14 bronze pieces representing significant historical events, most notably the July 14, 1958 Revolution.

The monument combines Babylonian, Assyrian, and Sumerian symbols, reflecting the transition from turmoil and anger to peace and prosperity. In the center of the monument, a soldier is depicted breaking the prison bars, symbolizing liberation from slavery and oppression.

This monument is not just an artwork; it is a pictorial record of Iraq’s history, embodying the hope, strength, and determination of the Iraqi people.
