HAAP Ep. 28 - Mana'o Monday on ʻOli or chants

Hawaii Abroad Audio Podcast #HAAP by Maxine "Kawahine" Aulelava

Episode notes

In this Manaʻo Monday episode, I share a quick lesson on ʻoli kahea and ʻoli komo. What are they? The simplest way to explain this is that:

  • An oli kahea is a chant performed by those that are calling out for permission to come into a space or an area they want to enter.

  • An ʻoli komo is a chant responding to that request which grants them permission to enter.

Tune in and hear the basic structures of Hawaiian chants, the purpose of using a chant, when chants are used, and even experience an actual chant recording. Join us
