What does it take for an aeronautical engineer, with her sights set on the skies, to make it her life's mission to instead dive ‘down deep’ into the soil? Anastasia Volkova, PhD, was destined to become an engineer and technologist. But as she describes, “working in a company that just builds up technology for the sake of it is not in line with my values which are to prevent the climate crisis.” Commercial food production has become one of the most destructive catalysts of human-induced climate change, responsible for 11% of the world's carbon emissions, she says. And what’s even more fascinating, is that soil sequestration alone has the potential to absorb enough carbon emissions to almost single-handedly avert the devastation heading our way.
