Author Interview: L. B. Shimaira ~ Vampires, LGBTQ+ rep and Erotic Horror

In this bonus episode, your basic local eldritch girl C. M. Rosens interviews author L. B. Shimaira (she/they) and reads an extract from her erotic horror novel, MY LORD, which was, at the time of this interview, published by Gurt Dog Press. MY LORD is a historical fantasy novel set in a fictional European country in 1239, featuring vampires, serfdom/medieval slavery, a castle full of dark secrets, a complex, blood-obsessed villain, and polyamorous relationships. We chat about LGBTQ+ rep in our work, including bi/pan polyamorous and asexual/aromantic-spectrum representation, as well as mental health issues and writing sex scenes. Ezra Arndt (they/them), [at the time of this interview writing as Nita Pan (she/they)] is a nonbinary, demisexual/biromantic polyamorous and neurodivergent YA/Adult Own Voices writer of the soft, bloody and monstrous. Their work has more recently turned to exploring the slasher-romance/goremance genre, although has always flirted with horrormance in various forms, especially with gothic themes and elements. Author Interview: Maria DeBlassie ~ Hopeful and Ordinary Gothic, Generational Trauma, Brujeria and Everyday Magic

Interview with author, professor and bruja Maria DeBlassie, with an author-read extract from her short story HUNGRY BUSINESS. We discussed writing the 'ordinary Gothic' and 'hopeful Gothic' not only as a vehicle for social anxieties and a process for exposing generational trauma, but also as a mode for moving on from trauma and creating a sense of hope going forward, particularly in relation to telling Own Voices stories for women of colour in the American context.
