This episode continues the discussion with the Pharisees as Jesus goes through two scenarios of healing on the Sabbath. After this, he then appoints the twelve apostles and names them. Once this occurs, Jesus conducts a sermon on a plain, and he discusses "The Beatitudes" and discusses "The Woes."
This episode will outline who I am and what my goal is with making podcasts about the Bible. I discuss my beliefs and goals while also presenting a summarization of the Gospel of Luke before diving into the first chapter.
This episode discusses the Dedication to Theophilus, Birth of John the Baptist Foretold, and Birth of Jesus Foretold. Luke presents a great framework as to what we will expect in this coming book as he introduces a big helper to Jesus alongside Jesus himself. This explanation is crucial to understanding how important of a part that John the Baptist plays in Jesus's ministry. We will discuss the content itself, facts, and other parts of history to explain why this is necessary.
This episode will go over Mary visiting Elizabeth as they are both pregnant. Her traveling into the hill country of Judah and speaking to Elizabeth will show John the Baptist's first encounter with the Holy Spirit as he is being created in Elizabeth's womb. Mary will then speak of song of praise known as the Magnificat, which Parises the Lord for the blessings he has given her. The end of the chapter shows the birth of John the Baptist and Zechariah's speech coming back to him. He will use this speech to prophesy and acknowledge John the Baptist's future as a prophet of the Most High. John the Baptist will pave the way for Jesus and his ministry.
The beginning of Luke 2 discusses Mary's birth of Jesus Christ. This shows the age old tale of how and where Jesus was born in Bethlehem within a manger. The text will discuss the purpose of his birth and why the location of his birth is extremely important. Additionally, the shepherds in the nearby area hear a command from an angel to visit Jesus as he was born the Son of God. This corroborates the story as there are multiple witnesses to Jesus's birth. This sets up the backstory to Jesus that will continue on within Luke in later episodes.
This episode continues the study in Luke 2 as Jesus is presented at the temple after his birth. During this time, prophecy and fulfillment is discussed as his path of the Son of God can be seen. We then also see him as a young boy visiting a temple during Passover and discussing difficult questions with the teachers. This provides the context that will setup the next chapter in the next episode.
Luke 3 shows the path that John the Baptist paved as he demonstrates the tradition of baptism for the first time in the Bible. This shows the symbolic meaning as to why we continue this tradition today. As he teaches those in the crowd, he clarifies that he is not the Messiah, but the Messiah will follow shortly after and fulfill much more than he ever could. Before the ministry of Jesus begins, the Chapter concludes by showing the Genealogy of Jesus Christ. This is important as it shows the records of how the important people in the Bible were all put in place for the purposes of ensuring that the path for Jesus was paved.
Luke 4 begins with Jesus fasting in the wilderness while being tempted by the devil for 40 days. He shows his authority and knowledge as he prepares for his ministry. Once the period ends, he returns to Galilee with the power of the Spirit as he intends on teaching in synagogues. The first instance that we see of this in the Bible, Jesus recites Scripture and states that he has fulfilled Scripture in this moment. The crowd is not pleased with this information, and they intend on killing him, but he escapes through the divine intervention of the Spirit.
In this episode, Jesus performs many miracles. We see how he will heal a man from an unclean demon, and we see a brief introduction to Simon and his mother, which will be expanded on in later chapters. Additionally, we see how Jesus heals many while still taking the time to be intentional. He makes it clear that his purpose is to be with all people, not just a specific group of people in a specific town.
In this episode, we see that Jesus goes to the Lake of Gennesaret as he recruits the first disciples. He does this after performing a miracle and telling Simon Peter that he will be a fisher of men. After the initial disciples start following him, we then see that Jesus goes to heal a leper. We see how the crowd reacts and his fame builds during this process.
