Consultation vs. Collaboration in an IEP Meeting

Consultation vs. Collaboration by Tasia Pinkham

Episode notes

In this podcast, I analyze a role-played IEP meeting to determine whether the interaction represents consultation or collaboration, using definitions from Chapter 1 of Dougherty’s Psychological Consultation and Collaboration in School and Community Settings. I explain why the conversation is an example of collaboration, identify the roles of the client and collaborators, and compare the collaborative process to counseling. I also highlight specific collaboration skills demonstrated during the meeting, including active listening, shared problem-solving, and the use of professional expertise within a team-based decision-making process.
