In Chapters 1–4 of Dracula, Jonathan Harker records his journey from the modern West into the unfamiliar landscape of Transylvania. Along the way, local people react with fear when they learn he is going to Castle Dracula, giving him warnings, protective charms, and signs that something is deeply wrong. At first, Jonathan tries to explain everything rationally, but the atmosphere of superstition, strange language, wild mountains, and midnight travel builds Gothic suspense.
