In Chapters 28–31 of Wuthering Heights, young Cathy escapes long enough to reach her dying father, Edgar, before his death. But Heathcliff’s plan has already succeeded: because of her forced marriage to Linton, Cathy’s inheritance is vulnerable. Linton dies soon afterward, and Heathcliff gains control over Thrushcross Grange as well as Wuthering Heights.

Nelly’s narration catches up closer to the present, and Lockwood returns to the frame story. When he visits Wuthering Heights again, he sees Cathy living in bitterness, Hareton struggling under her scorn, and Heathcliff still ruling the household through  ...
