During the interview Rick speaks about the reality of having racist tendencies within him and his longing to overcome those natural responses. Together, they delve into when slavery began in America, its eventual elimination at the end of the Civil War, a new type of slavery through the criminalization of displaced black slaves in the new society, Jim Crow laws, the Nixon and Reagan era's "War on Drugs" and the mass incarcerations of black Americans.
