Do Pakistani women really have the freedom to make their own life choices? Can they truly choose their own spouse without family interference?

In this episode, I’m joined by Zahra Salahuddin, a Pakistani journalist based in Berlin. Both Zahra and I are from Karachi, moved abroad for our master’s degrees, and later chose to stay and build our careers. We also both found life partners outside of our culture—something that often comes with immense pressure and scrutiny in South Asian families.

We dive deep into the realities of "freedom" for desi women—how it’s always conditional, always up for negotiation. Families may “allow” women to study abroad but expect them to return and marry.
