Episode notes
Many people aren’t aware of the concept of toxic positivity, which is a subtle form of gaslighting and manipulation. This pattern of behavior rejects or glosses over negative emotions to project an upbeat, positive image. Especially evident at this time of year -- on holiday cards and social media -- toxic positivity can be a kind of group gaslighting that creates a false narrative of the happy family. This pattern also can become a form of censorship, as no one is allowed or encouraged to address troubling issues. Ultimately, relationships in a family culture that engages in toxic positivity may become stuck in a superficial, limited connection, resulting in distance between relatives and even estrangement. This intriguing episode explores the little-known pattern of toxic positivity in a family culture and how to address it.
