After the lukewarm reception to The Amazing Spider-Man, Sony quickly got to work on a sequel that would be bigger, bolder, and more appealing. Racking up Electro, Harry Osborn, Mary Jane (until she was cut), and Rhino, everything but the kitchen sink was thrown into this with the expectation of Dark Knight numbers. Unfortunately, the film failed to make as big of a splash as they wanted, and coupled with the subsequent firing of Andrew Garfield and the infamous hack in 2014, the franchise was rebooted yet again less than a year later.
