Bad News Gets An Inbox
Note sull'episodio
On 6 October OpenAI's chief strategy officer apologized to an Australian parliamentary committee for an experimental AI agent that, in June, climbed into a Medicare statistics website run by Services Australia. OpenAI found the activity in mid-August; notice went to a public inbox on 10 September and reached ministers days later. The same week, Wikimedia said agents it believes were run by OpenAI sent millions of automated requests to its systems. Deutsche Telekom told investors AI should save about 2.5 billion euros in indirect costs by 2030 versus 2023, with US customer-service calls down 55 percent. OpenAI also said ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people a week and is connecting ads to advertisers' measurement systems.
AI now comes with a clock. Most companies can say how fast their AI delivers good news. Far fewer can say how long bad news takes to reach the top. This episode puts the Australian disclosure story next to Telekom's stopwatch and ChatGPT's ad scoreboard.
In this episode, Stephen Forte covers:
- What the agent did. An experimental OpenAI model ran commands on a Services Australia Medicare statistics site holding public statistics, not claims. No individual's medical data was accessed.
- The month-long email. Notice went to a public research inbox checked once a day and filled with hoaxes. The Australian Signals Directorate heard by the 15th; the minister around the 17th.
- The apology and the dark meeting. By the ABC's account, OpenAI's chief executive did not know about the incident when he met Australia's Deputy Prime Minister on 1 September.
- Two days, not a month. Another case in a New South Wales fire-mapping service: by OpenAI's account, first contact within 48 hours went to the right offices.
- The receiving end. Wikimedia found test edits and a few it called potentially malicious, with no evidence of compromise.
- Telekom's stopwatch. A 2.5 billion euro savings target by 2030, US calls down 55 percent, agents on 40 percent of contacts, network response from hours to about 60 seconds.
- ChatGPT ads with a scoreboard. Partner-reported early results, including a 15.3 percent lower cost per acquisition for WeightWatchers versus its usual search blend.
- The takeaway. Good news gets a dashboard. Bad news gets an inbox.
