In today's episode I'm joined by licensed therapist and adjunct professor Maliha Khan from Houston, Texas to talk all things Jama Taqseem! A thought provoking, psychological dissection of the popular drama that depicts joint family living with a very interesting mixture of dynamics and events. It gave us so much to talk about! Gender roles and expectations, culture clashes, fear in the family system, systemic change and resistance, healthy and unhealthy communication, sexual harassment, boundaries, intergenerational change and other important bits to do with couple and family dynamics in the South Asian culture and joint family systems. Episode #20 | “My In-Laws Keep Criticising Me”
A common occurrence that really damages a woman’s self-esteem is the constant criticism from her in-laws. It’s a tough thing to overcome and you might spend many years in fearing their words, being scarred by their words or overthinking them. Working on your perspective and your own worth will help you to build your strength back up. Remember to be kind to yourself because you’re dealing with a lot already! Episode #18 | In-Laws In Your Dreams
Today’s episode is going into the subconscious layer of the dream-world and exploring some of the ways that your in-laws might show up whilst your asleep. Should you take that as a warning? Ignore it? Or is there something deeper to be curious about? I’ll give you some examples of the different ways in-laws arise in your dreams and what it could be showing you about your emotional, relational and spiritual development. Episode #17 | Confession of a DIL: “I starve myself because I don’t like being around my MIL”
A sad reality is that there are a lot of daughters-in-law who are denying themselves of a basic survival need because they don’t like being around their in-laws. This episode explores a confession, it was sent in by one of my followers on Instagram, but there were a lot more sent in on the same theme and I’ve included them throughout the episode i.e. feeling guilty for eating before others, feeling guilty for eating food that someone else has cooked, feeling judged and criticised. Episode #16 | The Ugly Duckling & The Daughter-In-Law: Rejection & Belonging
Today’s episode is an exploration of the parallels between the story of the Ugly Duckling and experiences that daughters-in-law go through. Experiences of facing rejection, being in exile, trauma, isolation, losing your self-worth and discovering it again. The episode was inspired by the section on belonging in the book Women Who Run With The Wolves by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes (chapter 6). Episode #15 | Is this how it’s going to be for the rest of my life?
Today’s episode is about learned helplessness, a term coined by psychologist Martin Seligman in the 70’s. It refers to the state of helplessness after repeated negative experiences that a person has not been able to exit from. Seligman also went on to research and teach about learned optimism, the opposite to learned helplessness. With little control, lack of agency and resources, I see this phenomenon of learned helplessness lot in daughters-in-law so let’s talk about it. I’ll share more about what it is, how it occurs and what helps you to overcome it. Episode #14 | Confession of a DIL: “I don’t look forward to Ramadan”
Ramadan can be especially stressful for some daughters-in-law, a month that we would love to enjoy can become a month that is exhausting and full of dread because of the social roles and expectations. As with all confessions I don’t have the context so I’m exploring general issues and patterns that could contribute to this issue. Including: household chores, negative behavioural cycles and limited time for traditional worship. I provide alternatives including reframing your thoughts, making different choices and broadening your vision to see doorways instead of obstacles. It is possible to have a better Ramadan. I hope you have a blessed one. Episode #13 | For Neurodivergent Daughters-in-law
Life as a daughter-in-law living with in-laws can be a struggle for anyone, but for someone who’s neurodivergent, the struggle amplifies. Keeping up with family, making time to do the chores ‘properly’ and regularly, maintaining the home without any support… all of these come with extra difficulty and added emotional stress for a neurodivergent DIL. Today’s episode goes into this interplay between culture and ADHD for women. I will cover reasons why women with ADHD can slip through the cracks, including the gender gap in diagnosis, the differences in symptoms, the coping strategy of masking and the cultural demands placed on women. You’ll also be guided on how to go for an assessment if you feel you may have ADHD. Episode #12 | Your Couple-Identity | The shift your marriage desperately needs!
Today’s episode is a dive into family dynamics through an illustration* (by illustration I mean a diagram >_< ) When two people get married, the families expand, but how does the couple create its own unit within the family system? I will share an alternative, re-negotiation, of cultural norms so that your marriage can thrive (or at least be safe) whilst living with in-laws. You’ll understand the shift you need as a couple to prioritise your relationship and some of the common issues that arise from NOT creating this shift.
