We Are So We Do: 1 Timothy 6 (Part 1)

Is having sound doctrine a central part of your spiritual walk? What are some practical steps you can take to grow in your understanding of sound doctrine? What are some of the current challenges—from cultural influences to social media—that make discerning sound doctrine more difficult? How can you have an honest discussion about doctrinal differences with someone while still showing love and respect?

We Are So We Do: 1 Timothy 5

Discussion Questions: Who has been a role model for you in your specific calling? How about someone perhaps not with your specific calling, but is an example of work done well? How can you encourage, support, or serve them today? Can you outline what makes someone true to your specific calling - character, achievements, etc (1 Timothy 5:9-10)? Can you recognize the common pitfalls and temptations in your specific calling (1 Timothy 5:11-13)? Is there someone who holds you accountable in these things? Do you struggle to play second or third fiddle in particular areas of your life? Do you know why this particular area causes you to struggle in this way?

Discussion Questions: Do you have a plan for your spiritual growth? For growing your spiritual gifts? What systems, processes, teachers, and resources do you have in place to hold you accountable for growing spiritually? How would you describe your commitment and dedication to your spiritual growth? To fan into flames the gifts you have been given? Discuss a hard time or tough season in your spiritual growth? How did you persist through the difficulties?

Discussion Questions: 1. Which qualities listed for overseers or deacons are you personally challenged to grow in? 2. FBA has a portrait of a graduate, and if you created a summary of the most important characteristics of you calling what traits would be on the list? How do you match up to this portrait you’ve created? 3. How do you apply the principles of prioritizing relationships and responsibilities while also pursuing other callings in your own current circumstances? Which relationships and responsibilities have you neglected, or been tempted to neglect, while you’ve pursued other things? 4. Ask someone close to you: · To describe your reputation among your community. · To identify what they see as the defining characteristics of your character. · To explain what they see as your priorities.

Discussion Questions: Who are you called to reach, teach, love, lead, serve? How does the truth that there is One God, one mediator, one redeemer inform your understanding of your calling? Lead you to live out your calling? How does prayer fit into your calling?Who specifically are you called to prayer for? What favor do you request from God to fulfill your calling? How do you ask others to pray for you in fulfilling your calling?

We Are So We Do: 1 Timothy 1:12-20

In what ways has the Lord's mercy and grace been displayed in your own life, and what are the implications of this for how you view your calling? How does your personal experience of receiving God’s mercy and grace encourage you to treat others who have not yet experienced it? How are you fighting for your calling and your doctrine? What are the biggest enemies of fulfilling your calling and holding right doctrine? Is the aim of your doctrine love and is the result of your doctrine praise?

We Are So We Do: 1 Timothy 1:1-11

Discussion Questions: Do you have a general or specific calling from God? How did God reveal the calling to you? How has he empowered and encouraged you to follow your calling? How does what you believe impact the way you think about and treat others? Think about the way you personally engage in religious discussion. Are you more likely to engage in "vain discussion" and speculation or in conversation that builds up "love that issues from a pure heart, and a good conscience, and a sincere faith"?
