Note sull'episodio
In this episode of the Did You Know? series, we explore how faith, freedom, and exploration intersect across October 3 and October 4 in history.
We begin with Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation, issued during the Civil War. Although George Washington had proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1789, Lincoln’s October 3, 1863 proclamation established the annual national observance that shaped the modern Thanksgiving tradition. Congress later made Thanksgiving an official federal holiday in 1941, fixing it as the fourth Thursday of November.
October 4 then brings a powerful trio of moments:
✝️ 1226 — St. Francis of Assisi Buried His life of humility, poverty, and service led to the Feast of St. Francis, observed on October 4 in many Christian traditions.
🇺🇸 1777 — Battle of Germantown General George Washington’s bold attack on British forces near Philadelphia showed the young nation’s determination to fight for freedom, even in defeat.
🚀 1957 — Sputnik 1 Launched The Soviet Union’s launch of the first artificial satellite shocked the world and ignited the Space Race. The United States responded by accelerating scientific research, leading to the creation of NASA and ultimately the Moon landing.
Together, these events form a theme of: Faith → Freedom → Exploration From the altar, to the battlefield, to the heavens, history reminds us that when hearts turn toward God, nations rise—and humanity dares to look beyond itself.
