Episode 44; Latrese Curtis and Charla Nash

Esplicito
Welcome back, Crime Family, this week we are on Episode 44, and you're not going to want to miss these stories. Bailey goes first to remind us about the horrific North Carolina murder of Latrese Curtis. She was traveling between Durham and Raleigh when she was brutally killed on the side of the highway a mile from her abandoned car. In the end it turned out that she was victimized by one of the last people anyone would have thought to look at. And the reason for it is....well....you'll see. Beth brings the story of several crimes. Some of the crimes were against nature, which led to the final crime--the near-death of Charla Nash. Travis the chimpanzee was raised in an environment at odds with his instincts. But Charla went through absolute hell and her entire life changed forever when Travis lost it and mauled her. She has been through more than anyone should ever go through, and 13 years down the road, she is one of the strongest, most determined, and least woeful people you could meet. There is a lot of nuance in why this terrible thing happened to her, so hopefully we as humans have learned something. And we can definitely learn a lot from her resilience. After you finish this episode, you ought to go check out and subscribe to our friends Carmen and Joanna at Live, Laugh, Murder Podcast! Every week, awesome storyteller Carmen tells a story that MIGHT be true crime, or it MIGHT be a plot from a horror movie. Non-horror-loving Joanna has to figure out which it was, and her reactions are priceless. They can be found anywhere you're listening to us! So have a seat, grab a glass, and let's learn something from the lives and misfortunes of others. Thank you for stopping by, as always, we love you guys and we're glad you're here! ________________________ You can find us on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook @TrueCrimeBnB You can send us an email at TrueCrimeBnBPod@gmail.com If you enjoy our show, please rate and review on Apple Podcasts or GoodPods, or give us a 5-star rating on whatever platform you prefer! https://linktr.ee/TrueCrimeBnB?utm_source=linktree_profile_share And if you REALLY enjoy our show, we would love and appreciate any amount of your support at Patreon, here: https://patreon.com/TrueCrimeBnB?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator

Episode 43: Susan Brockert and Natalie Queiroz

Esplicito
Whoa, get ready for a wild episode 43, Crime Family. This week we flipped our traditional roles and Beth took the heavy story; Bailey brought up the mood with a really maddening and then amazing upper story. But first things first. Susan Brockert spent 15 years working her tail off at a job she loved. She succeeded in every respect, and her company decided to show their appreciation and reward her with the trip of a lifetime to celebrate her achievements. Of course, she naturally wanted to take her boyfriend of two years. That decision led to the end of everything for Susan in the most horrific and brutal attack by the man who supposedly loved her. See why we needed Bailey after that?? So, next is the story of Natalie Queiroz, who was 8 months pregnant and just trying to meet her loving baby daddy for lunch. As she walked to the cafe, she was targeted in a stabbing attack on a public street, surrounded by dozens of people. But Natalie was lucky enough to survive and go on to bring goodness and light into the world, despite the horrific reality that led to her nearly dying in the street. This week will make you angry and confused, and certainly wondering how people manage to justify their sociopathic actions in their own minds. Please remember to take care of yourself and don't forget to keep your eyes open for the warning signs of domestic violence. If you're not sure where to go for help, in the US, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at +1 800-799-7233 or text START to 88788, or in an emergency, call 911. In the UK, you can go to the government website for domestic violence assistance, at this link: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/domestic-abuse-how-to-get-help or in an emergency, call 999. After you finish this episode, you ought to go check out and subscribe to our friends Paige and Sam at M3: Murder, Mystery, and Mayhem. They're squirrely in an endearing way, but once you get past the opening squirrels, you have great research and insightful storytelling to look forward to! They can be found anywhere you're listening to us! Thank you for joining us today, this episode could be heavy enough to justify a whiskey drink! And as always, hang around, the bloopers might have you craving bonbons or Twinkies (yuck, but to each their own!)!

Episode 42: Chad Oulson and Debra Puglisi Sharp

Esplicito
Hi again, everybody, welcome back to the BnB, where we'll always leave the light on for the late arrivals, but the doors will be locked. Because...crime, y'all. This week we have stories of two women who loved their husbands, and were forced to experience their murders. Bailey will enrage you with the absolutely infuriating murder of Chad Oulson, who was murdered at the movies by an ex-police captain who claimed he was in fear for his life. Why would he feel scared for his life? Uhhh, because Chad threw some popcorn at him after being hassled multiple times. When you hear the sequence of events, entirely instigated by the ex-captain, it is really outrageous that this case turned out the way it did. Beth then has to try to recover us from the first story, but this one is rough, too. Debra Puglisi Sharp and her husband Nino Puglisi were just living their best lives and looking forward to their 25th wedding anniversary, when a random stranger wandered in off the street and murdered Nino and took Debra captive. But there is even more to this story than the senselessness of the crimes--it's about how Debra ultimately kept her wits, outsmarted her captor, and got herself rescued. If you would like to visit the Oulson Family Foundation, founded by Chad's wife Nicole after his death with the goal to help children affected by gun violence, you can find it at www.oulsonfamilyfoundation.com Also, please don't forget to check out Torture Podcast, whose trailer you heard at the beginning of the episode. Kevin and Dan share fascinating information about old-timey and modern-timey tortures, and they're smart and fun to listen to. Give it a chance! We're glad you're here for this episode, because these victims did not deserve any of what happened to them. So let's get comfortable and get into this week's stories. Episode 41; Special Guests: Picture the Scene Podcast (in the Good Guy Seat)

Esplicito
First off, let us warn you that the audio this week is a little unpredictable, because we were recording remotely, across the Atlantic Ocean, and our network was acting like a brat. BUT we think we have more than made up for that, because this week, we were so honored to have the amazing UK / Ireland duo of Andrew and Rachael from Picture the Scene Podcast, and we enjoyed every minute of it. We took over the role of bad guy, with Beth sharing the heartbreaking story of Yoshihiro Hattori, a lovable and vibrant 16-year-old Japanese exchange student who was killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in a completely preventable "Castle Doctrine" shooting. Then Picture the Scene takes the reins as Andrew brings us the story of Pooja Gaud. Pooja was a seven-year-old Mumbai schoolgirl who was taught to respect her elders. When a childless couple approached and kidnapped her, her family spent nearly a decade searching and hoping for the return of "Girl #166". And as Andrew reminds us: this IS an uplifting story! The BnB was filled to the rafters this week, and we couldn't have been happier. If you aren't already following Picture the Scene Podcast, please go find them and subscribe wherever you're listening to us! You can also find them on Twitter and Instragram as @scenepod. They are wonderful, and we'd hate for you to be missing out! Please remember to hang around for the bloopers after the meowtro, which are decidedly less Puss-centric this week. But we like to keep you guessing. Thank you, as always, for stopping by. While you're here, grab a piece of DAIM Bar cake--Andrew's treat!

Episode 40; Bowling Green Murder Mansion and Nicholas Iwamoto

Esplicito
Wow, Episode 40, everybody! Thank you for joining us! This week Bailey brings to light the true story of the terrible history of the Bowling Green Murder Mansion in Kentucky, and the questions surrounding the involvement of Harry Kilgore and 'maybe' his beloved, who married another man. Or two. Beth shares the harrowing Hawaii survival story of Nicholas Iwamoto, who only wanted to serve his country, but instead had his whole life hijacked and rerouted by a man who nearly took his life. This one is rough, but the ending shows how strong a man can be. We are so excited for our 40th episode, and we wouldn't want to do it without you! Although, if you stick around for the bloopers, you'll see that it MIGHT be easier without the input from Puss ever so often. As always, Crime Family, many thanks for being here with us. Cheers! ------- Please remember to go check out In the Nick of Crime, whose trailer you heard and who are producing a great podcast; we'd love for you to listen and support them. ------- You can find us on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook @TrueCrimeBnB You can send us an email at TrueCrimeBnBPod@gmail.com If you enjoy our show, please rate and review on Apple Podcasts or GoodPods, or give us a 5-star rating on whatever platform you prefer! https://linktr.ee/TrueCrimeBnB?utm_source=linktree_profile_share And if you REALLY enjoy our show, we would love and appreciate any amount of your support at Patreon, here: https://patreon.com/TrueCrimeBnB?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator

Episode 39; Kim Wall and Stacey Lyn Chahorski

Esplicito
Hey, all you Crime Family members, welcome back to the BnB this week! As promised, we are bringing you a regular episode today and Bailey is in her usual spot out front under the big oak tree. The first story, from Bailey, is the maddeningly stupid murderer who lured Kim Wall to her death when she was trying to interview him for an article she wanted to write. From the minute the two of them were alone together, it was 100% certain that his deranged plan would not go undetected, so why did he kill her? See? Maddening. Beth follows up with a story that isn't a happy ending, but it's a positive for forensic science. This is the case of the sexual assault and murder of Stacey Lyn Chahorski from Michigan, who was found in Georgia in 1988. And if you believe in karma, then this does have a fitting ending. And an update on the California Statutes of Limitations that we discussed in Episode 37, thanks to my friend from college, Don XXXXX. Go on now, head out to the story circle in the shade, and we'll be right out with spiked lemonade. Careful not to get cat hair on your pants. Thank you for stopping by, we are always glad you're here! ------- Please don't forget to go listen and subscribe to our dear friend Sam, at Creme de la Crime Podcast, whose trailer can be heard at the start of this episode.

Episode 38; Lee Rotatori and Laura Jastre

Esplicito
Week 38, and here we are back at the BnB with stories to tell! Bailey is in front with the case of Lee Rotatori, who was a dietitian about to embark on a new and exciting new chapter in her life. But, as in most of our stories, she never got the chance to enjoy it, because she was cut down in the prime of her life. And even though her killer was finally identified through familial DNA, that answered one question and raised a couple of new ones. This one is mysterious. Beth brings the positive ending, but first you'd better be ready to get dragged through some thorns, because this story is a rough one. Laura Jastre and her friends were living dangerously deep in drug culture, but an unprovoked attack that killed two of her friends ended up being the jolt that Laura needed to take her own life back and try to help others do the same. We had all kinds of tech excitement with this episode, but none of it was more distressing than Beth's alternating verb tenses in her story! Apologies to her former English teachers--she DOES know better than that! Everyone, we appreciate your being here again this week, and as always we thank you for taking the time to listen. If you don't mind, please lock the front door before you sit down, and we'll tell you what we learned about these two cases and the people involved. Welcome, Crime Family! Welcome. But really--please don't email Puss. (She can't read.) Episode 37: Christy Giles / Hilda Marcela Cabrales-Arzola and Lauren Huxley

Esplicito
Well, hello and welcome back to the True Crime BnB, where we are always 100% pet friendly....even when half of our bloopers consist of Bailey devising ways to murder the screaming demon. This episode had some operator error issues, and Beth had to record half of her story twice--so when we refer to 'the FIRST time we recorded this,' that's what we're talking about. In fact, Beth is the bad guy this week and brings the enraging story of two vibrant, amazing young women who went out for a party in Los Angeles last year and never made it home. But it's not the usual story of being snatched off the street. These women, Christy Giles and Hilda Marcela Cabroles-Arzola, went to an after-party where the host had disgraceful and heinous plans, along with a history of doing the same to other women over the years. Bailey tells us about Lauren Huxley, an Australian woman who was caught up in absolute horror and barely survived it. But her strength, spirit, and determination to get her life back will lift your spirits! So this one wore us out, and we imagine it will you, too. Grab a fluffy pillow to hug, pick your favorite bean-bag chair, and we'll tell you about three women who had big plans for their lives, and the monsters who interrupted them. Thank you for stopping by! Episode 36; Sandra Johnsen-Hughes and Verna Sue White

Esplicito
Welcome back to week 36 at the True Crime BnB, Crime Family! This week Bailey walks us through the perplexing disappearance of Sandra Johnsen-Hughes in California. Having spent her life as an avid solo-explorer, the circumstances of her last known whereabouts and mysterious disappearance in a National Park leave countless questions unanswered. Beth brings an amazing story of survival against all the odds. Verna Sue White had no chance against the masked man who viciously attacked her in her home, but once he had threatened her daughter, Verna Sue was never going to let him prevail. And that was the turning point, sealing his fate. And on top of all that, we have an amusing anecdote about old-timey pirates! So as always, we love you and thank you for stopping back at the ol' True Crime BnB, and we are ready to share this week's stories with you. The snacks are out, the beverages are ready, and it's time to kick off your shoes and take in a few minutes of true crime, on us. Meow.

Episode 35; Carol Jenkins-Davis and Friedericke Fechner

Esplicito
Welcome to all of our new subscribers and listeners, and we thank our whole Crime Family for being here again! Week 35's stories have made our blood boil, and then made us hopeful in remembering there are some really amazing people in the world. We'll just warn you: Bailey's story had us so angry that there is more than our normal swearing in this episode. But if you hear the story of the disgraceful and barbaric murder of Carol Jenkins-Davis, along with the aftermath and shameful treatment by the 'Sundown Town' of Martinsville, Indiana, and you're not angry...something's wrong. Beth has the second story this week, with cellist Friedericke Fechner, who bought a dilapidated old house to renovate and preserve, and through its history, helped reunite a family whose scattered members didn't think they had any other living relatives. So, it's a bit of rough one, but we know you're tough enough to get through it with us. We're sorry there are no Puss interruptions in the bloopers this week, I think she knew our nerves were shot after that first story. And now, we need a glass of wine. Care to join us? No worries, I mean, it's a BnB.
