The Statue of Liberty is one of the world's most recognized symbols of freedom, democracy, and opportunity. Gifted by the people of France to the people of the United States, the statue was designed by French sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886. Officially named Liberty Enlightening the World, it commemorated the friendship between France and the United States and celebrated the ideals of liberty and self-government.
