On June 27, 1844, Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum Smith were martyred while being held in Carthage Jail in Illinois. Growing opposition to the Church and its leaders led to false accusations and imprisonment, despite promises of protection from local authorities. While awaiting trial, an armed mob stormed the jail and killed both brothers. Their deaths marked a pivotal moment in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and strengthened the faith of many members who viewed their sacrifice as a testimony of their commitment to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.
