Although often overshadowed by other Founding Fathers, Richard Henry Lee played a crucial role in America's journey toward independence. On June 7, 1776, Lee introduced a resolution to the Second Continental Congress declaring that the American colonies were free and independent states. His proposal set in motion the events that led to the drafting and adoption of the Declaration of Independence less than a month later. Lee's vision and leadership helped provide the framework for a new nation founded on principles of liberty, self-government, and individual rights.
