The Utah War

In this episode, learn how disagreements over political authority, religion, and federal control led President James Buchanan to send thousands of U.S. soldiers to Utah Territory. Fearing persecution and military occupation, members of the Church prepared defenses and attempted to slow the army’s advance without direct large-scale battles. Though the conflict created fear and hardship, negotiations eventually prevented major bloodshed, and power was peacefully transferred to new territorial governor Alfred Cumming. The Utah War revealed the growing tensions between the federal government and the Latter-day Saints while helping shape the future of the American West.
