Note sull'episodio
In this episode of The Vancrux Podcast, we explore what the passage of time reveals about the limits of human knowledge and whether any of our beliefs can ever be considered final. From the ancient idea of the atom and the limitations of Newtonian mechanics to Einstein’s relativity, Karl Popper’s falsifiability, Thomas Kuhn’s scientific revolutions, Larry Laudan’s pessimistic meta-induction and Gödel’s incompleteness theorem, we examine how theories once considered complete have been challenged, revised or replaced. We explore underdetermination, theory-ladenness, mathematical limits, quantum mechanics, dark matter and the tension between relativity and quantum theory, alongside historical examples such as continental drift, germ theory and the discovery of H. pylori. But does this mean everything we believe is destined to be wrong? Perhaps not. The deeper lesson may be epistemic humility: our best theories can be incredibly successful without being the final description of reality. As our knowledge grows, so does the unknown—and perhaps the greatest danger isn't being wrong, but becoming so certain that we stop looking for where we might be wrong.
