Nearly two thousand years ago, a mountain called Vesuvius explodes over the Roman town of Pompeii. Ash rains down. And there, in the museums today, are the people, frozen exactly where they stood, some seemingly still mid-bite.

At least, that's the story everyone tells. Cass is certain. Pip has a letter written by a teenager who actually watched it happen, and a scribble on a wall that quietly breaks a "fact" every book has repeated for two thousand years. Turns out those frozen figures aren't quite what you think, and nobody's even sure what day the mountain blew.
