Stagione 1

DARK STAR - Bomb Voyage

Can four hippies and their popsicle commander disarm a sentient nuclear device as they grapple with the finer points of phenomenology (all while battling a living beachball)? These questions and more will be answered when Justin introduces David to his favorite “bomb”-com, John Carpenter’s 1974 cult classic, Dark Star. But which host hasn’t seen a certain Sean Connery film from the same year? Or a certain zombie film from 1985? The W.H.Y. Podcast’s official list of unwatched movies is approaching critical mass! WHISPER OF THE HEART - The Hills of Tama City are Alive with the Sound of Music!

Studio Ghibli is renowned for popular fantasy films like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Howl’s Moving Castle. In a very special rewatch episode, David and Justin discuss Hayao Miyazaki and Yoshifumi Kondō’s coming-of-age story Whisper of the Heart, an underrated Ghibli gem that’s magical in its own way. But does this bold reimagining of the 1989 romance manga remain faithful to the source material? Plus, both hosts are guilty of more cinema sins–including a certain award-winning Damien Chazelle film! Intro music by Andrew Zap. MELANCHOLIA - Deep Depression Impact

Is Melancholia a gateway movie into the Lars von Trier Cinematic Universe? Is it wrong to find the humor in the total annihilation of life as we know it? And where’s that campaign tagline?? Listen in to find out the answers to these and other burning questions! Lots of unseen movies are discussed, but are they earth-shattering revelations? Intro music by Andrew Zap. THE FALL - Fall Guys and Dolls

This 2006 tale of a waylaid Hollywood stuntman is not to be confused with another cinematic fall guy. A first-time watch for both hosts, David and Justin weigh forth on Tarsem Singh’s singular passion project, The Fall. But is the movie just style over substance? Plus more unseen movies, including a well-known anime, are revealed! Watch MUBI’s In Conversation with Tarsem here Watch MUBI’s In Conversation with Lee Pace here Intro music by Andrew Zap. KING KONG (1976) - How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Kong

1976’s King Kong is not your typical monster movie–plus it’s a first-time watch for Justin! This week’s discussion touches on questionable photography techniques, a theory about The Big Lebowski, an unexpected connection to Adam West’s Batman, and more. Intro music by Andrew Zap. ERASERHEAD - Somebody Put Baby in the Corner

Your hosts tackle an imaginative, forward-thinking movie from 1977 that isn’t Star Wars. Is David Lynch’s Eraserhead about the anxiety of becoming a new parent? We have no idea! We’re not even sure it’s a baby! More unseen movies are revealed, plus David and Justin go off on a Godzilla tangent. (And yes, a previous Prometheus episode is referenced, but we’ve shelved it for now–for the greater good!) THIS IS THE WHY - A Balm for Barren Earholes

Longtime friends David and Justin flirt with landing in cinema jail as they reveal notable movies they’ve never seen! Possible missed-movie sins may include Platoon, American Graffiti, Heat…and more. They also discuss and rank the Alien movies, which they have seen! Is the long-running franchise an exercise in diminishing returns (and do the AVP movies even count)? Plus, the subject of the next episode–a seminal David Lynch movie Justin hasn’t seen–is revealed! (And yes, your hosts are aware of who actually directed Return of the Jedi…in theory!)
